So you want a Sugar Glider as a pet! What do you know about the care of these little creatures? What are their habits, how long do they live, what do they eat, what special care do they need.
Origin
Sugar gliders are native to Australia’s Eastern parts, Papua New Guinea and parts of Indonesia. They can live for 10-15 years in captivity and a sugar glider is about 5 to 6 inches long, with the tail adding another 6 inches to its length. These little guys and gals weigh only 4 to 5.5 oz or about 100-160 grams when full grown.
Marsupials
Gliders are marsupials [mahr-soo-pee-uh l] meaning; their young are born very immature, they crawl through the mother’s fur and grow in a pouch on the mother's abdomen. Sugar gliders get their name from a fur covered membrane that extends from their front wrists to their back ankles that allows them to glide through the air, like a little kite. Sugar Gliders in the wild move from tree to tree by jumping from a branch and gliding to the next. This little guy has hind feet that has a large, opposable big toe, this helps him grip branches. The second and third toe creates a kind of built-in grooming comb.
Companions
Sugar gliders are much happier when they have a glider companion(s) and it's really the best way to raise them. Sugar Gliders are colony animals in the wild and Nature ment them to be with their own kind and their true nature should be honored. Same sex joey (baby marsupial) pairs will be just as happy as male / female pairs.
Bonding With Their Owner
Sugar gliders are very social animals and need lots of companionship. For this reason they bond well to their owners. The question is; can you provide enough attention and spend the necessary time with your glider? It is mandatory you educate yourself before purchasing your new family member. I have added a series of videos to this website presented by: Dr. David M. Brust, DVM and president or ASGV™. These videos will help educate you before you purchase your glider.
Consider More Than One Sugar Glider
Consider keeping more than one glider if you can’t provide the time needed for your pet. Besure to be honest with yourself when thinking of the tim you can spend with these little guys and gals. Remember they can live up to 10 - 15 years so this is a very important fact to consider. Ideally a same sex pair or a female and neutered male to prevent unwanted breeding. Introducing adult Sugar Gliders is difficult so it is probably best to raise your Sugar Gliders together from a young age.
Nocturnal
Remember Sugar gliders are nocturnal (they prefer the night) that is when they will be most active. They are usually very happy to spend time with their owner during the day sleeping in a pocket or bonding pouch.
